Concert 2 in Michael Houstoun’s BEETHOVEN reCYCLE project was at the Napier Municipal Theatre. Chamber Music NZ Life Member and former chair of the board, June Clifford, had nothing but the best to say about the performance…
Wow! – another triumph – standing ovation again from the large audience bowled over by depth of emotional experience. The slow movements with phrasing were, as always, beautiful and Michael’s tonal control of dynamics were immaculate. The fugal passages in final fast movement of Sonata No 101 were taken at breathtaking speed with superb linear control and brilliantly executed. He makes it look so easy!!!
Ever generous, Michael gave five young pianists outstanding coaching on Monday morning with lovely asides about his own performance of some of the works – especially to twins Darcy and Hayden Snell playing Poulenc Sonata for Four Hands which Michael and Diedre Irons have enjoyed doing. His advice to them: “make it fun!!”
I can’t wait to hear the ’ Hammerklavier’ on Sunday 7th April – every programme is a wonderful journey through the miracle which is Beethoven when interpreted by Michael.
