Chamber Music Capturing Life

Today Chamber Music New Zealand’s Marketing and Communications Assistant, Candice de Villiers, blogs about sharing the chamber music love through video! …

At social situations, when meeting people for the first time, it isn’t uncommon for the following scenario to play out:

Them“What do you do Candice?
Me“I work at Chamber Music New Zealand.”
Them“Great! So what exactly is chamber music?”

I am certain that I am not the only chamber music fan who experiences this in everyday life. It is in fact a challenge that Chamber Music New Zealand has faced for many years. How do we find new audiences and get them interested in what we do if their mind draws a blank at the mere mention of our artform? This year, with funding and support from Creative New Zealand, we teamed up with third year design students from Massey University (Nathan Foon, Mon Patel and Danesh Pillay), our Wellington audience members, Tokyo String Quartet and the young Quadrivium Quartet to create a series of videos capturing the elements of chamber music that we love.

In November we’ve been sharing the videos online to introduce people to our kind of music and hopefully resulting in a dinner party conversation for me in the future that goes something like this:

Them“What do you do Candice?
Me“I work at Chamber Music New Zealand.”
Them“Great! I saw these wonderful videos online  all about chamber music. Tell me more!”

(Seriously if you meet me at a party PLEASE say this – I will be blown over!)

Pic from video To top it all off we asked some of the artists we know and love to send us their thoughts around certain elements of chamber music (Thanks to Jeffrey Zeigler, Natalie Lin, Nikki Chooi, Gareth Farr and Jason Bae for taking part) … here’s the result:

If you are reading this post, and it ‘strikes a chord’ then I encourage you to share the videos with your friends and family and tell them all about it. Let’s share the chamber music love around the world!
