Wellington-based Trio Amistad (Simon Brew, saxophone; Rebecca Steel, flute; Jane Curry, guitar) were on tour last month, as part of our Encompass series.
Their tour covered a lot of ground around the country: after starting in their home-city they ventured to Gore, Motueka, Whangarei, Warkworth, Tauranga and Gisborne.
One of the things they were really interested in doing was outreach into schools and communities along the way. They even detoured from Motueka to Nelson to coach some chamber groups at Nelson College – and it was perfect timing leading up to the District Rounds of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest!
And schools tend to have plenty of saxophone, flute and guitar students…
We say many thank-you’s to the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) for sponsoring the coaching programme – something they’ve done since 2010. Over the last five years the number of groups getting coaching has dramatically increased – this year almost 120 groups were involved!
To the left, you can see Trio Amistad’s Jane Curry coaching students around the piano in Gisborne.
Myles Payne, from Nelson College for Girls, said “this is an amazing gift that you offer the students. Learning like this is powerful, and has made a real difference with each group.”
And as we’re celebrating the 50th Jubilee of the contest – let’s also celebrate the ongoing coaching of groups around the country, that we’re able to provide for free, thanks to ABRSM.
